Baboon Sanctuary

Howler Monkey at Belize Zoo

The Baboons are actually Howler Monkeys

Known to locals as baboons, the monkeys at The Community Baboon Sanctuary are actually Black Howler Monkeys. Found only in a small area of Central America, Black Howler Monkeys are the largest species of wild monkey within the Americas.

The Community Baboon Sanctuary consists of eight villages that occupy roughly 20 square miles on the banks of the Belize River. Approximately 1500 monkeys live in this protected habitat consisting of jungle, farmland and riverfront.

Guided trail walks throughout the sanctuary allow visitors to experience the monkeys up close. Hearing the monkeys howling in the trees above you is an unforgettable experience. Other jungle creatures such as anteaters, iguanas, turtles and several species of birds thrive here as well. Don’t forget your binoculars!
