Jan 8, 2012 - Jan 14, 2012 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: Definitely the most popular fish on the flats, our bonefish starred for our 1st Annual Invitational Tagging Tournament to Benefit Bonefish & Tarpon Trust at El Pescador. The largest bonefish was tagged and released by Adam M. fishing with his teammate Tony C. and Captain Nesto. The 23.5 inch fish was just one of several fish tagged and released that brought them the Grand Champion Award! Congratulations Gentlemen.
PERMIT: It was my absolute honor to give Jenn her permit pin this visit to EP! Jenn and Hackney come to fish at least twice a year with Captain Cesar, and it is really fun to see their enthusiasm and dedication to the sport of fly fishing. Jenn and Hackney landed permit on fly the same day with Captain Cesar – the day before the tournament! Oh well, it’s still permit. And like I told Jenn, you start counting. So cheers for numero uno! Father and son team Rick and Dan landed two permit of fly with Captain Emir on day one. They are landed permit, but did not qualify for the tournament because they were under 14 inches. All the same they were awarded pins for the accomplishment. Bob was not in the tournament, but landed a 20 lb permit on 7lb spin! He was bonefishing with Captain Carlos when a big permit passed, he cast, and the fish ate! When he came back to the dock his eyes were as big as a permit! Very fun.
TARPON: Sooooooooo close! Day one of the tournament presented some decent tarpon fishing. Lots of fish shots, but picky eaters. Solanas and Mosquito in particular had a lot of fish on the rising tide. We had eats but no fish to the boat this week. A couple of days it was just too windy to cross the water to get to the fish.
SNOOK: Snook are around. And really big ones….like 15 – 20 lbs. Snook are showing themselves, so I expect to see some landed here in the very near future. With the rain and winter tides, snook are seen just outside their mangrove home or cruising the beach.
FLIES THAT WORKED
Green Biters size 8 for the smart bonefish, Christmas Island Special in size 4 and 6 for permit in orange. 1/0 light flies for our resident tarpon.
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to Captain Nesto for winning First Place in our Tournament with his good friends Adam and Tony.
What an exciting week. We had our 1st Annual Invitational Tagging Tournament to Benefit Bonefish & Tarpon Trust at El Pescador. I want to thank Chris Peterson who represented Bonefish Tarpon Trust. Chris is a board member and also the owner of Hells Bay Boatworks. The week was about education as well as fun fishing. Mito Paz gave us an up-to-date report on where we stand with protecting our mangroves from destruction. Green Reef is our local NGO here in San Pedro. Ali Flota contacted Green Reef a few years ago to elicit help when she realized there was a threat to our fishery from development. Together, El Pescador and Green Reef have been able to protect spawning habitat for bonefish, permit and tarpon here around Ambergris Caye.
We had guests participating in the event and we had guests here to chill and enjoy some world class flats fishing. Ed and Alex were here for some father son time and landed their first bonefish, Bob still hasn’t come back to earth from catching the permit on 7 lb……Jim knocked out his tooth biting his tippet but it didn’t stop his spirit. His fishing buddy Randy decided he needed to show up to have some quality time with his friend. He found new skills and fun fishing as a bonus. For me, I loved watching the new and old friendships in nature’s playground. The only way we can thank our fish is to help them, and that is what this week was all about!
