Jan 10th - Jan 16th 2010 Fishing Report
I attended both fly fishing shows in Denver, The Fly Fishing Show and International Sportsmens Expo. I arrived from Belize to -10F conditions. I was expecting it. What I wasnt expecting was returning to Belize on January 11th to record cold conditions here in Ambergris Caye. It hasnt been this cold in 20 years! We were very fortunate that we did not have the serious fish kill that Florida suffered. So far, so good. We are looking forward to warming conditions which we know will be soon. Time to practice casting and get flies in order for when it gets good
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: We did not see the usual numbers of bonefish due to record cold conditions which forced the fish to deeper water. When days warmed up toward the end of the week, bonefish were skittish on the flats, and suspect about everything. In spite of this, bones were caught in deeper water sight fishing when the sun was available.
PERMIT: Schools of permit were found, but none caught. Anglers reported, "They followed, but would not eat. Again, we blame the cold conditions.
JACKS: Big jacks were seen in the lagoon, but not targeted.
TARPON: Cleared out due to cold weather. A few were seen rolling. None caught this week.
SNOOK: No one went looking for snook, so they were safe.
FLIES THAT "Would Have" WORKED
FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials, Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold, and pink patterns.
FOR TARPON: Black Death Tarpon Bunnies were tossed, as were some crazy patterns I have never seen before. Rick was happy to land his using a Black Death.
FOR PERMIT: Orange Christmas Island Specials and Merkins.
