Jan 26 - Feb 1 2014 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING
Husband and wife Mike and Georgia came for a week of fishing, snorkeling and relaxing. What they got was loads of bonefish! Capt. Hilberto’s legendary shore lunch was mixed with a morning of tarpon fishing with some nice wading for bonefish while lunch was simmering on the fire,. Father son team Paul and Anthony have paired up with Capt. Luis for some bonefish action with some cudas thrown in for fun. Robyn 1 (we have 2 this week) got bonefish while out with Capt. Cinoeh – her first ever and hubby Terry landed a bunch more!! Chris and Capt. Emir got some bones, Murray and Robyn II from Alberta got rid of their winter blues with some silver bones with Capitano Cinoeh.
Kim came through to break the permit slump! He says he owes it all to Capt Kechu and they were so close to a grand slam he could taste it, but the tarpon decided not to taste his fly after multiple follows! Dan from Orvis was oh-so-close with a big permit that cut him off half through a nice fight. Doreen got her first permit of her career with Capt. Junior.
Mike landed a nice 30-pound fish while fishing hard with Capt. Cesar. It was a tough battle that Vinny got on video. Sam launched one in the air about 10 feet in front of the boat while fishing with Captain Tomas, but at the apex of the leap the fly came fly back right at him. Sam could swear he heard the fish say “nanna,… nanna na na” as he descended back into the water! Jimmy from Orvis’ Cleveland store landed another tarpon for Capt. Cesar fishing the morning of his departure. Capt. Cesar is on tarpon fire this week… returning guest Ralph hooked up 3 today that were all over 80 pounds!!! Terry (husband of Robyn 1, got his first ever tarpon on a fly rod on an overcast Friday, 15 pounds but full of it, 6 jumps and 10 minutes later he was beside the boat.
Jacks, Barracudas, Pompano (close cousin of the permit)
Flies that worked:
Bonefish: Crazy Charlie, Christmas Islands, Gotcha, and some special ties!
Permit:Christmas Island Special
Tarpon: Chartreuse toad, tan toad
Guide of the Week:
Captain Cesar for the most tarpon of the week.
Our Orvis Flats seminar ended with a bang with the nice tarpon from Mike with Capt. Cesar. Thanks again to Orvis for sending such a great group of folks. We have new friends forever. Kim and Doreen deserve some praise for their permit prowess.
