February 6th 2011 - February 12th Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: We had the crew from “Breaking the Surface” here this week. This TV episode featured Diana Rudolph teaching Kim Bain how to fly fish for bones. Well, Kim got it, and now she has a new bag of tricks to add to her fishing. And when you want easy bonefishing, it seems bonefishing uses that time to show you just how challenging it can be. Skinny water, backs and fins out of the water, one cast and it better land lightly and perfect….it’s either “oops” or “got em.”
PERMIT: Permit fishing continues to be crazy good. Here it is, mid February, and there are permit all around – something that usually happens closer to March. Anyway, Diana landed permit on fly, Kim landed 3 on spin/crab, Jim permit on fly, Kelly and Hal nice permit on spin/crab, and brother Kevin, nice permit on fly. Congratulations! They went from 8 lbs to 25 lbs!
TARPON: Tarpon Tony got it done again! Way to go. Diana also landed a tarpon this week, that’s my girl!
SNOOK: Not seen as much this time of year - they are closer to the mainland.
JACKS: The jacks were around but there were too many permit to chase instead.
FLIES THAT WORKED
FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials size 8 and 6, Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold, sexy patterns. Sexy patterns are flies that move so great in the water you just to have it.
FOR TARPON: 3/0 yellow toads, green Toads, Black Death cockroach, and look out with purple! Your choice, circle hooks will help people who have not had experience setting tarpon, while the standard is still with J-hooks, or set hooks.
FOR PERMIT: Orange and pink Christmas Island Specials size 4 stripped fast. Tan and green crabs, size 6, when they are tailing. We strip a lot of flies for permit. It is the way the San Pedro guides do it, and it works! Shrimp patterns, size 6, on long 14-16 ft leaders down to 16lb test. Glass minnow patterns work as well. You just have to be brave enough to try.
REPORT SUMMARY:
Old home week here at El Pescador. Dr. Tarpon Tony showed up – blowing his whistle to get Nesto going. They have been fishing together for 20 years. It is fun to watch Tony give Alex, Nesto’s son and guide-in-training, lessons from the “client.” Tony likes to try to offend as many people as he can, but does so with a huge heart. We just love you Tony. And then for me I had my best fishing gal pal Diana Rudolph here. They were working on the TV Show, Breaking the Surface. It was flat out painful not to leave in the boat with her in the morning, so we booked out fishing time for May. We realized we have to schedule our fishing time, or time gets away from us. I suggest you do the same. It is February, and the fishing is great. Share it with someone you love. Happy Valentine’s Day! Lori-Ann.
