Feb 19, 2012 - Feb 25, 2012 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES:Bonefishing out in the lagoon and up the beach for do-it yourself fly fishing has been stellar. Rising tide in the mornings and late afternoon producing some nice fish in the 4 lb plus range. I found the fly for the really smart fish out in front of the lodge. That’s all we are going to say about that! See EP facebook for a great shot of Susanna with a nice bonefish.
PERMIT: Kelly and his brother Kevin are back! Kelly is so casual, he doesn’t care if he catches fish on fly or spin…his brother Kevin is a die hard fly fisherman. Kevin landed a nice permit on fly….and then, just to get a good bet going, Kelly throws a fly to a permit, and the permit eats. Two permit on fly landed with Captain Kechu this week. Nick landed a 15 lb permit on fly with Captain Emir. All on CIS.
TARPON: Captain Emir found a new spot out in the middle of nowhere…about 6 to 8 feet deep, and produced 2 - 50 lb fish on fly for Nick and Bill. Kevin is completely obsessed with tarpon and needs to land one in a big way. Brothers Tommy and Mike had bites with Captain Gilberto, but came unbuttoned.
SNOOK: Not targeted this week.
FLIES THAT WORKED
All about the Black Death for the tarpon, J – hooks size 2/0. A lot of experimental flies tried on permit, but it’s the CIS every time. Bonefish, double weed guard patterns for the bones over turtle grass – bitters, crabs, worms.
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Captain Emir for his double tarpon hook up on fly with Bill and Nick.
REPORT SUMMARY:
: : Kirk and his dad Mike were here to play …. They are quite the team, and they bring a smile to all of us. Brothers Kevin and Kelly also here again to chase tarpon, but ended up with permit instead. “You can’t always get what you want….you can try sometime, you still might find, you get what you need!” I know you will get a tarpon next time, you are the man Kevin! New buddies, Nick, Glenn, Bill and Carl. Great to get to know you and way to go on you angling this week. All in all in was a bit of a challenging week due to the wind, but we had some epic fish landed. And no, we don’t have a barracuda, jack, snapper Pins. You are awarded a pin for landing a bonefish, permit or tarpon. OR, a grand slam!
