Feb 26, 2012 - Mar 4, 2012 Fishing Report

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONES:When you don’t have the sun, the saving grace is finding tailing bonefish. It is very exciting to come onto the flat, and then spot shimmering tails as the bonefish feed on crabs and shrimp. When they are feeding like this, you want to put the fly right next to them. This is challenging because you have to land the fly lightly, not to spook the fish. If you put it too far, they might turn and go a different direction and you’ve lost your shot. And for the beginners, there are always “muds” – where hundreds of bonefish feed, you toss you fly in the middle of the frenzy, and you will soon learn how to land a bonefish on fly! Captain Emir tagged a 3 lb bone caught by Erica of the Reel Women group!
PERMIT: Jim has been fishing all over the world, but hadn’t landed a permit. With Captain Carlos on day one, he got the job done! Nice 8 lb permit on fly. And let’s not forget Scott from Bozeman who landed 2 permit on fly with Captain Emir!
TARPON: Dave from British Columbia fished his heart out for tarpon. So did Tom R, and Colin from Ontario filming for his TV Series, “The New Fly Fisher,” landed one on Sunday! Nice job everyone, it was tough this week for tarpon.
SNOOK: John landed a nice 20 lb snook on fly with Captain Sinoe!

FLIES THAT WORKED

All about the Black Death for the tarpon, J – hooks size 2/0. A lot of experimental flies tried on permit, but it’s the CIS every time. Bonefish, double weed guard patterns for the bones over turtle grass – bitters, crabs, worms.

GUIDE OF THE WEEK

Captain Emir for double permit for Scott from Bozeman.

REPORT SUMMARY:

Challenging fishing conditions. Good sports, and good fishing karma for our anglers. John and Shawn were here causing havoc out on the flats with Captain Sinoe. Great to see you two. Rich is an Orvis fishing manager made for customer service. He takes great care of his guests and is always a pleasure for me to work with! Thank you Rich for your incredible positive attitude and all the great stuff you brought with you! I look forward to the next time, and hopefully more days! Again the “connections,” among the world of fly fishers continues to gain strength. My buddy Tom R was here whom I have known for 20 years, Colin from The New Fly Fisher I met in 2003…and the very best is our return clientele that show up and feel like family. A big piece of El Pescador’s brand and mission is “family.” We live and work here, and we enjoy seeing our neighbors from all over the world visit us. Gracias,
