March 9 - March 15 2014 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING
Campbell Bracken will be honored on our El Pescador Grand Slam board. Campbell Bracken and Captain Cesar, March 12th, 2014.
Debra was too intimidated to start on the casting platform during our evening casting session. She said she would wait until the next morning when everyone had left, and then she would practice. When I went out to give her some pointers, she was already so excited to fish the next day. She had a solid 40 ft, accurate cast and this is what helped her land her first bonefish on fly! We had a lot of fancy awards this week, and Debra’s bonefish on fly was one of them. Her husband Glen and daughter Kelly ripped em up on fly – I lost track of the numbers of bones they caught with Captain Luis. The O’Shaughnessy family came here with the Ray family to fish and become better fishermen. And this they did. It was Jamey’s graduation present – to come to EP with his family and fish. Jamey loves his fly fishing. He had some big bones landed with Captain Tomas! His dad, Michael, had a beautiful double haul by the time he left in addition to several bonefish landed on fly. His lovely wife Clare also landed her first bonefish! She went out with her son Alex and they both landed some nice bonefish. Robert was here with his daughter Carolyn. He was so proud that as soon as he saw me he shouted, “Carolyn landed her first bonefish on the fly rod!” Hunter was here with his dad, Kurt. Hunter landed some nice bones on fly. Steve and Mark fly fished with Captain Alex and told me how much they enjoyed bonefishing the skinny water for 4 and 5 lb bonefish. Big fun. The Watford family was also here for spring break. Joe, Meredith, and their sons Jacob and Matt all landed bonefish! Greg wasn’t looking for bones, but they ended up being a nice break from tarpon fishing. Yeah, our bones aren’t as big as the Bahamas, but they still make us smile. And mixing it up sometimes brings the fish! George loved chasing bones on fly as well. Gary, Kunio – we loved watching you guys come in at the end of the day. And we can’t forget Brett and Bronwen – especially when I awarded their bonefish pins early in their trip! Wil, one of our younger anglers, is used to catching fish and it was no surprise that he landed several nice bonefish. And our six spin anglers ripped it up. It was a true pleasure to meet such a fun group of guys. James, David, Don, Thomas, Bill and James – thanks for all the laughs. My favorite bonefish story this week was all about Sydney and Sawyer Rogers. Sydney went out in the lagoon with her family and landed her first bonefish on fly! Then, her 8 y/o brother Sawyer did the same thing! It was also such a treat to be fishing the flats with a beautiful fishing family I have known for years. Congratulations to all of our anglers that landed bonefish on fly and spin this week!
Hold on! OK, Jason was here from Crested Butte Anglers. Whoa! He landed 4 permit on fly with Captain Emir, and those that were in his group were just as happy! Craig landed a 25 pounder on fly with Captain Cinoeh. (check it out on our El Pescador facebook page and like us!). Ed landed a permit on fly with Captain Kechu. Dick landed 5 permit on fly with Captain Gilberto in one day! And a real treat is that his beautiful bride Emily also landed a permit on fly. She broke the rod, but the fish was landed! And yes, I was thrilled that my long time fishing buddy, Matson, landed a permit on fly with Luis. But the big story this week was all about Campbell. Campbell landed 2 permit on fly one day with Captain Cesar, and his dad Josh landed one on fly as well. Then, the next day he landed another one to SLAM!. At 17, we are pretty sure he is our youngest angler to SLAM with fly. Amazing permit fishing on fly this week!
I was thrilled that Kurt landed his tarpon on fly with Captain Luis. They had been stalking these fish and then it all came together! And then, drum roll……………….Campbell with his tarpon on fly with Captain Cesar for his SLAM! Yay! Lot’s of eats, jumps and misses for Glen, Kelly and Kunio. Don’t worry Kunio, next time you and Captain Tomas will get revenge! Nice fishing everyone.
Captain Luis has his spots....but they didn’t want to eat this week.

Guide of the Week:
Captain Cesar for making life memories for Campbell Bracken! At 17, Campbell was awarded his first Grand Slam pin. Tons of people were thrilled over this amazing day of fly fishing for Campbell, his father Josh (who also landed a permit on fly) and Captain Cesar.
Our fishing life intertwines us with some spectacular people and places. Yes, we are in search of a better cast to land the fish of our hearts, but the most precious part of the story is always the people. We were sold out this week with father and sons, father and daughters, mother’s and sons and families enjoying being present with one another. Fishing brought you all together to share this week with us at El Pescador. Thank you. I know it gave me goose bumps as I was wading the flats with Matson, his wife Kathy, Sam (who at 14 can cast 80 easy), Sydney and of course, Sawyer. Sawyer learned to cast 55 ft at age 8. But his dad does own Angler’s West – one of the best fly shops in Montana. I heard Matson’s voice travel over the water as he guided his family into fish. It was a very familiar voice as we used to guide the same rivers. I would hear his voice instructing his anglers. And then, here he was, visiting us with his family – and his voice, teaching with joy and extreme patience. Some of the simple pleasures mean so much. Thank you everyone for a great week. Fish On!
