March 12, 2012 - Mar 18, 2012 Fishing Report

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONES: Just some flat out beautiful sight fishing for bones this week with the incoming tides. Dropping tides = spooky fish. Big fish up to 6lbs caught in the lagoon wade fishing. You have to go out there and explore to find them!
PERMIT: Alan went out and landed a permit on his first cast with Captain Kechu! And then, on their last day, his wife Cheryl does the same thing, first cast. Nice going from Calgary! Tony said he wasn’t leaving until he landed a permit and he landed his first and then another one, both on fly, with Captain Erlindo. Six permit landed on fly with Captain Emir! Look for pictures of brothers Devin and Kyle landing permit after permit. The permit were 5 to 8 lbs. And then, Hackney is here to celebrate his big 40. Jenn (hot angling wife) and Cesar had this great plan and it worked. Hackney landed a 22 lb permit on fly with Captain Cesar. They measured and released the fish which ate a gummy minnow in deep water. And Russell, your permit may have been 2 lbs, but it was a permit on fly. Start counting everyone….and then we will see you here at EP to help you with your permit addiction.
TARPON: Hackney landed an 80lb (measured) tarpon on fly with Captain Cesar. Lot’s of other shots and grabs, but this was the only fish landed this week.
SNOOK: This is really late for our snook fishery, but we are still finding them with dropping tides by their mangrove homes.
OTHER: *Chris landed a 40lb cobia with Captain Luis. Unfortunately the fish broke off right at the boat as they were discussing the bbq plan. They changed flies, but it was a green deceiver that got em.

FLIES THAT WORKED

Tan and white out there for Savannah flies. A lot of experimental flies tried on permit, but it’s the CIS every time. Bonefish, double weed guard patterns for the bones over turtle grass – bitters, crabs, worms.

GUIDE OF THE WEEK

Captain Kechu. Captain Cesar went all out for his friend Hackney who turned 40 this month. The chocolate cake was yummy and I’m thinking his birthday wish came true… 80 lb tarpon and a 22 lb permit in 2 days of fly fishing!

REPORT SUMMARY:

St. Patrick’s Day Luck. After some tough wind and rain the past month, it’s been glorious to have the sun and manageable wind. It’s Spring Break and we have had the pleasure of hosting several father and son fishing teams this week. A little tough on father Randy to come back to the dock and hear how his two sons went to permit heaven – 6 permit on fly! Jeff and Ryan got into their first bonefish as well as David and Andrew. Will and Will, also on Spring break, went out and attacked the flats each day. Bob brought his buddy Franny, and brothers Cody and Owen. Bob and Cody know EP well, so it was fun for them to show off their favorite fishing places here on Ambergris Caye. Alan and Cheryl here from Calgary hunting permit on fly…and the journey continues.
