Mar 15 - Mar 21st 2010 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: The wind allows us to get closer to the big bonefish and some dandies were caught this week! 2 six pound bones landed - which is huge for Belize. And pound for pound, we believe our bonefish are a stronger strain of fish. Aaron Adams will be here in a few weeks from Bonefish Tarpon Trust so we'll get real data to support our theory! Stay tuned. All guests caught bonefish this week - beginners did very well for mudding fish - 20 plus fish released per person. An average of 5-10 bones per person for sight fishing in skinny water.
PERMIT: We are seeing more permit as the season moves into "prime time!" Mark landed a permit...
TARPON: And then Mark landed a tarpon...all in 24 hours. So he is lobbying for the "24 Hour Grand Slam!" I was caving, but the guides all agreed, it had to be in one day of fishing. Big deal, he still landed the 40 pound tarpon by grabbing the tarpon rod when he was landing a bonefish... his son grabbed the bonefish rod, landed the fish. Mark - one cast, the tarpon ate. Landed. There is more to the story, but the end result made for one memorable 24 Hour Grand Slam!
JACKS: A few jacks were landed - not that they aren't a great fish, it is just that the anglers each time thought they had a permit. Permit and jacks like to travel together.
SNOOK: Mr. Snook was seen but not targeted.
FLIES THAT WORKED
FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials size 8 and 6, Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold, sexy patterns. Okay, we are using patterns tied on.... circle hooks. Size 8.
FOR TARPON: Black Beauties and Grizzle Bunnies, some Toad patterns as well.
FOR PERMIT: Orange and pink Christmas Island Specials size 4 and Merkins.
REPORT SUMMARY:
The "fish story" is something we live with as anglers. Some people really like to perfect their fish stories - my good friend Paul Bruun is one of the best. He writes for The Jackson Hole News and Guide. Besides being what I call him, "The Encyclopedia of Fishing," his angling takes him from the small cow town of Jackson Hole to the far reaches of our planet in search of fish. I'm thinking about PB now as I hear Mark tell his story of his "24 Hour Grand Slam". No doubt, this story will be retold several times, as good stories are honored. I love that this was a father/son trip, and that Christian (the son) landed the bonefishas the tarpon bit Dad's fly! Again, all can be quiet, and then in moments, chaos!
