March 30 - April 5 2014 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING
Cynthia and Daniel brought their kids Kate and Patrick for a getaway and a little fishing with Capt. Kechu and Capt. Cinoeh. All earned their bonefish pins early on. What fun!! Bonefish were happy to eat flies with very little prejudice, brothers Will and Ben nailed them, Mary, Brandi, JB, Bill, Neil, Kevin, Larry, Eric, Ryan, Kevin, Larry all landed bonefish in decent quantities. Our friends from the U.K. Mark & Trudy, Nigel and his 2 sons Simon and Nick and buddy Ivor got their first taste of Belize bonefish to start their trips. John and Jennifer busted through the tarpon. Raford and Pam got in some bonefish in between some tries at tarpon fishing. Maureen landed her first ever bonefish and first ever fish on a fly rod! There was lots of wading going on because of the windy conditions making it difficult to pole a boat effectively.
Lots of shots, but only “Her Highness the Queen of all permit in the land”, came through. Jean was the hero of the week hooking and landing a permit while wading with Captain Kechu. Neil was closing in on his goal of a permit everyday and finally got 2 to eat the last day, so close! Brandi became obsessed with permit and will be back to even the score very soon.
Scott from Cody teamed up with Capt. Emir for a perfect fly rod tarpon around 40 pounds on Tuesday. John (Scott’s son) had a tarpon eat maybe a foot off his rod tip. They were eyeball to eyeball, a staring contest… tarpon 1 John 0. JB became addicted to tarpon in the first hour of his trip. The saga started with his first cast ever to a tarpon.. a jaw- dropping jump throwing the hook back at him. He made up for it the next day with a fish to the boat thanks to Capt. Tomas. The Fly Shop’s fearless leader Kara wrestled with her first poon but came up short with Capt. Alex. After a spectacular eat and jumping exhibition, the hook came back slightly bent which indicates a shallow penetration into some bone! This fish was originally reported at 40 pounds but estimates have been growing daily to world record proportions. Ryan’s last day was special when a very large fish ate and raced directly under the boat and out the other side almost breaking the rod, the jump on the other side of the boat dislodged the fly to gain his freedom. This all took place in 3 seconds… everyone was shaking their head, holy cow! Joe and Maureen landed tarpon on the last day – 3 to be exact with Captain Vince in control.
A big Jack for 10 year old Kate, Cudas for Patrick ( Kate’s older brother) Spanish Mackerel, Skipjacks, and Snappers.

The Fly Shop of Redding brought a great group of anglers down this week that made our lodge an even better place to live and work. My heartfelt thanks to Kara (of The Fly Shop in Redding CA) for her undying enthusiasm for our sport that made all of us here at El Pescador a little happier each day.
