March 31, 2013 - April 6, 2013 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: The bonefish were very cooperative (as usual) with everyone able to catch them, even our first timers to saltwater and some first time fly fishers! Roy and Di with their young sons, Matt and Benjamin all got bonefish on their first days. Matt was quick to inform me that he caught 22 fish that day! Their guide was veteran Captain Erlindo who has been with El Pescador since the beginning. Gordon, Laurie, Michael, Mick, Paula, Katie, Linda, Mark, Brian were successful every time they went bonefishing. Honeymooners Jon and Dee deserved their bonefish pins awards getting on the board the first day. Returning guest Lindsy was sharpening her casting and easily landed lots of bonefish.
PERMIT:Young Michael scored a nice permit with Captain Cesar, Scott landed one with Captain Luis and then one on a day without a guide wading on the west side of the island, Bob persevered and on the windiest day landed a nice 10 pounder with Captain Hilberto. Visiting sportswriter Jan landed a 20 pound permit thanks to Capt. Emir after a fairly quick 30 minute battle.
TARPON: The wind didn’t stop our young angler Christopher from jumping a tarpon with tarpon guru Cpt Tomas, followed by Roy who jumped one with Capt. Kechu. Saturday was Tarpon day! Poor Carter had an epic 2 hour battle with a 100 pound fish that eventually chewed through the bite tippet, Capt. Emir chased it to the main land but it was just too tough. Brian landed his first tarpon with Kechu and lost another. Return guests Jim landed a 40 pound tarpon with his guide Tomas’ coaching.
OTHER SPECIES: a few snook, ladyfish, a lookdown, a few big jacks, cudas, snappers, added variety for many boats.
FLIES THAT WORKED
Bonefish: Gotcha, Crazy Charlie’s in tan or white, just about anything would work.
Permit: Christmas Island Special, Gotcha, Del's Merkin
Tarpon: Orange Cockroach, chartreuse toad
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Tough choice this week, as all the guides had their moments, so it is a 5 way tie for Luis, Emir, Tomas, Kechu and Cesar all for some hard work that paid off for their guests!
Mid week winds put a damper on tarpon fishing but when the winds laid down we had a great day on Saturday. The permit fishing was steady even with the windy center of the week. Special notes go to some great kids that are throwing some serious amounts of fly line – Christopher and Parker. Slightly older, but on track to be great fly fishermen were high schoolers Michael and Carter. --Ed
