April 18th - April 25th 2010 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: Bonefish remain our hero here in San Pedro. It was especially nice since The Bonefish Bonnies were here from Key Largo! Fourteen female anglers on this trip to El Pescador, and they were all awarded bonefish pins! Bonefish from 2 to 6 lbs were caught sight fishing in skinny water was especially rewarding for the advanced anglers. Nice fish. Ron, Ray, John & Vinny returned for more fun this year, and they all caught several bonefish on fly. The biggest lesson with our bonefish
.dont over strip set! It all comes down to bonefish teaching us anglers about finesse, then hang on.
PERMIT: The guides report seeing big schools of permit everyday now. Schools are anywhere from 20 fish ranging 5 15 lbs, to hundreds of fish seen that are 10 30 lbs. Fish have been caught wading they saw the tails and walked in
..or more common casting to a big school, putting the fly right in the middle of them - strip fast and even because someone is going to grab it. Dont over set! She says. Ron landed his permit!
TARPON: They ate, they broke off. They jumped, and threw the hook because he forgot to bow
they were picky and refused flies on Savannah because those are smart fish but worth it.
0 landed, but we give Mr. Tarpon a 10 for solid fun.
JACKS: 3 NICE jacks landed this week on fly. 12 15 lbs, big fight!
SNOOK: Mr. Snook not targeted this week.
FLIES THAT WORKED
FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials size 8 and 6, Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold, sexy patterns. Sexy patterns are flies that move so great in the water you just have to have it!
FOR TARPON: Black Beauties and Grizzly Bunnies, some chartreuse Toad patterns as well.
FOR PERMIT: Orange and pink Christmas Island Specials size 4 stripped fast. Also some gray crabs, size 4 its all about the materials.
REPORT SUMMARY:
It was all about the people this week as much as the fish. The Bonefish Bonnies from Key Largos Ocean Reef and Ron and his buddies who get an A + for playing and laughing with them. Ray wore his white shirt to match The Bonnies at cocktail hour lots and lots of stories and the Bonnies knew more dirty jokes than the boys!. Everyone in camp shared fishing with their friends over the years and this week, a new story will be told. Barbara landed 4 bonefish before slipping and breaking her arm. She was in a cast the rest of the week and did not complain once! She took pictures of the week, and put together a beautiful presentation on her laptop. I was in tears, but thats not news. It happens. I was happy to award Ron his permit pin, he really deserved it. As I waved good bye to these two groups I thought how lucky we are to share this wonderful home of ours with such special guests.
