April 26th - May 2nd 2010 Fishing Report

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONES: As usual, even if the wind and rain are part of the picture…, Mr. Bonefish is available. Ya gotta love that… and then, it reminds us how lucky we are. Jody showed up with her fellow associates from a law firm… she said she would be so happy to land a single bonefish on fly. Well… wind, rain, and 4 bonefish later, Jody got it done in a few available hours the first afternoon of their fishing. And when the weather gets tough, the tough go fishing. Wading up the beach for tailing bones up to 5 and 6 lbs…. a few landed. These are really smart fish. John and his group from Telluride Outfitters were here to pursue permit and tarpon, but bonefish filled in their day when it got slow for the fish when they were tough to find. Bonefish caught seaside as well as the lagoon.
PERMIT: I chuckle when people show up and say they want permit. Don't we all! But then there is the art of staying focused on what you really want to make it happen. This was the story for Clay and Julia from the Telluride Outfitters group. Double permit one day with Emir, of course. Emir is a magnet for permit. Lots of shots to schools but these were the only 2 landed this week. Congrats. Staying focused on what you want for fun worked.
TARPON: This same Julia was crazed for tarpon. Her last day she was out with her husband Clay and Luis. Luis found a great lagoon and here come the tarpon, nice 20- 40 pounders…. She casts, one ate, she set, the 40 pounder jumped 3 times, she forgot to bow, and that was that. Speechless for a few hours. Great video coverage. George was also in camp this week. He and his wife Judy have been coming here to El Pescador, from Alaska, for 25 years and we just love them. I almost forget to include them because they are family. George landed 2 tarpon with Nesto, his same guide of 25 years. All George does when he gets here is tarpon fish. Focused!
JACKS: 2 NICE jacks landed this week on fly. 12-15 lbs, big fight!
SNOOK: Mr. Snook not targeted this week.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials size 8 and 6, Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold, sexy patterns. Sexy patterns are flies that move so great in the water you just have to have it!
FOR TARPON: Black Beauties and Grizzly Bunnies, some chartreuse Toad patterns as well.
FOR PERMIT: Orange and pink Christmas Island Specials size 4 stripped fast. Also some gray crabs, size 4, because it is all about the materials.

REPORT SUMMARY:

Just a tough week for weather on the flats around San Pedro. But the two groups here, and long-term guests George and Judy really made it happen…. Lemonade out of lemons as they say. I cannot tell you how much fun it is for all of us here at El Pescador to see George and Judy show up on the dock. They immediately get bare foot and proceed with what they love to do here. Bird watch and fly fish for tarpon. They can be seen in the early hours with their binoculars zoomed in on one of our special birds. George turned 80 this year. He was bringing in the cooler, fully loaded, from the end of the pier back to the lodge to eat lunch one day. I yelled to George to let us help but George Being the nurse that I am, I said, "OK, I'm ignoring you." Which is what is best to do when George wants to do something his way. Same for fly fishing for tarpon. The man knows when to go, when to stay home, and in the end, he gets his fish. He always follows Nesto's lead. Nesto won't say 3 words in the boat when he is fishing with his guests, so watching him and George over coffee, was entertaining. And try, just try, to get a fishing report from George. No way. Thank goodness for Judy who kept us in the loop. And thank you Judy for looking so lovely each night at dinner. What a treat!
