April 26 - May 2 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING
yes, love... 3 years ago Jana met Dave here at El Pescador when they were on separate trips. They both thought the “fishing” was great and they fell in love. They returned to El Pescador this week and were married on the dock with bonefish tailing in the background!
Ben, Jenn, Julien, Victoria, Zumi, Bob, Jana, Dave, John, Bob1, Cinda, Bob 2, Peter, Sonia, Ken, Kerry, Ritchie, Mark, Tim, Ross, Ron, Tom and many more guests had their rods bent with numerous bonefish over the week. Ambergris Caye is blessed with more bonefish per square mile than anywhere I have been. Maybe not the biggest in the world but they are among the most cooperative! A few 3-4 pound fish were the biggest of the week. The bonefish are returning to our home flats after months of being absent when some not often seen Sargasso seaweed, which has plagued the entire Caribbean this year, flooded our shallow high tide flats and smothered our local grass.
Returning guest Jim from Texas hit it big with 8 permit in one day… big state, a good friend and lots of permit! Young Victoria from Switzerland is enjoying a 10 day holiday with her parents Julien and Kim. While spin fishing on her 3rd day she also landed 8 permit in one day! Wow! Gip teamed up with our most veteran guide Erlindo for a couple of permit to the hand on Tuesday (Erlindo went on to land the 8 with Jim) , Tom landed a huge permit, Ben just missed a grand slam after landing his permit, Scott got his first permit, Kim got 2, Victoria got 2 more, Ross used his skills to get into some permit successfully landing one, and Robert wrapped up his long trip with another permit. And guess what? Victoria got another one – a bigger one -18 pounds? Tim landed his first permit of his career much to the delight of his friend Mark ( well delight with a slight tinge of jealousy)
Tarpon fishing is looking better and better when the weather and wind have calmed down, Silas hooked some, landed one and his father Robert followed suit with a 25 pound fish to the boat and brother Silas got a beauty and hooked several other tarpon during his weeks adventure here at El Pescador
Barracuda, jacks, snapper, triggerfish, snook.
Ross worked hard and it paid off the last day for him big time heading out early and getting the tarpon to hand by 7 am, the permit was tougher but a nice dinner plate size permit struck a 70 foot shot across the wind while wading. The bonefish got a little scary as they spent an hour without seeing one, but it happened! All 3 species in one day!
A soft grand slam was achieved for Ben, catching a tarpon, permit and bonefish during his week here at El Pescador
Flies that worked:
Bonefish: Christmas Island specials in orange, pearl and pink – size 4-8.
Permit:SimRam, Mantis Shrimp, Merkin crab, Puglisi crab (Olive)
Tarpon:Black Death, Peanut Butter, Orange Cockroach.
Killer permit fishing continued into this week, with a grand slam, a wedding, and some happy anglers! Tarpon weather seems to be coming so let's see what happens next week! Fish On!
