May 3rd – May 9th, 2015 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING
Sam, Volanni, Kate, Jack racked up some bonefish on their first day, Kate went from zero to double hauling in 2 days between the casting lessons and her 2 days on the water! A special student indeed! Brendon and his fish prolific wife Kristen, Ron, RJ, David from the UK, Jon and Amy, Julien, Kim, Victoria, Peter, Ron, Chuck, Wade, Jeff, Norm, Colonel, Mike, Thomas and his lovely wife Lori got Belize bonefish fever on their first day out. Roger & his son Dave charmed their way to bonefish despite the winds, John from the UK got a few days out and chased everything that swims (including bonefish) and was spooled by something unknown to this day!
The big bonefish of the week went to Kristen who landed a 6 pounder while wading in the back lagoon! Husband Brendon was both thrilled and a little jealous at the same time.
Sam got into a permit on his first of 2 days on the water. Peter got a really nice permit, Jeff had first ever permit as did Colonel, Chuck & Kim, Congratulations to all that tangled with these elusive flats dwellers! Jim landed his first permit on the fly late in the week despite the heavy winds.
Tarpon fishing is heating up – jumping fish is now daily - landing fish is daily. Hungarian/Canadian Beatrix (Trixie) trixed a tarpon into eating and after 5 solid jumps the guide had to start the boat to chase the fish down as it was half way to Mexico within seconds, After some frantic reeling she was able to tire the fish and bring it to hand, A solid 30 pound hunk of tarpon. The Colonel and his second in command Chuck both got a tarpon with a nice olive toad (and added a couple more later in the week) Sam landed a tarpon, Volanni is the reining queen of the Sliver King, Lori got right to work with a tarpon on her first day on the flats! Kim landed a 70 pound sliver beauty while trolling on the reef! That’s a new one on my watch. John who is visiting from the UK Jumped two big fish (like 80 pounds) but lost one near the boat after 5 spectacular jumps.
Julien landed a tarpon in 5.5 seconds!!! How is this possible? The third jump landed in the boat!! Luckily it was small and didn’t hurt anyone or itself. The rule is if a big tarpon jumps in your boat you are best to jump out!
Ladyfish, Snapper, Jacks, Barracudas.
Although no one slammed in a single day we had an incredible run of “soft” grand slams (a bonefish, tarpon and permit during your stay here at El Pescador. This week we had 6 people do it this week! Congratulations to Kim , Norm, Jeff, Peter, Colonel, and Chuck for completing a very difficult hat trick!
A soft grand slam was achieved for Ben, catching a tarpon, permit and bonefish during his week here at El Pescador
Flies that worked:
Bonefish: Christmas Island Special, Crazy Charlies, Beck’s Sili Legs (chartreuse).
Permit:Bauer crab, Raghead crab in olive/brown, Peterson spawning shrimp, CI Special
Tarpon:White toad,, Olive Toad, Black death, White deceiver, Puglisi’s pinfish.
Tarpon are back in the mix this week with some spectacular results, Permit slowed down a little but this could be due to the fact more people were fishing for tarpon since the weather was so good.
