June 9, 2013 - June 15, 2013 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: Ed and I tell people when you come here to El Pescador: “We have tagged close to 1000 bonefish.” I asked Dr. Aaron Adams, Executive Director for Bonefish Tarpon Trust: “How come we haven’t seen any return on our tagged fish?”. He said, “ Tag 2000, and talk to me. “ This area – where the Barrier Reef meets our island, Ambergris Caye , is a very special part of Belize. We have a ton of bonefish. And I speak for our entire team, - we love seeing anglers get into bonefish. You are in the game! Think about it…I have a little fly tied onto some mono, and a fish that lives on shrimp and crabs is fooled. OK, big deal. Well, it becomes a very big deal. You have just cast a plastic line with a hand tied fly (somewhere?) to a wild fish – and connected. I’m always very proud to honor our guests with bonefish pins! Congrats to Sara from Orvis and all of you! Keep casting to your dreams.
PERMIT: Silly, really. Captain Sinoe…..we’re just trying to keep his head from swelling to the size of a Mayan Temple. So far, Justin has landed two permit in one day, and another the next….there has been a lot going on in the permit world around here. Recently the permit are hanging out with the tarpon, resulting in a ridiculous number of SLAMS lately, and we are thinking this is the reason. Long Caye, when it’s good, is good. Congratulations to Jeff and Bruning! Anglers had several chances….but as we say, “When it’s yours, it’s yours.” Permit addiction, scary. Bruning and Jeff… way to go.
TARPON: It’s ….Bruning’s tarpon over by Mosquito Caye with Captain Emir is . very well documented by Dan DaVala. Here is Bruning kissing his tarpon. He kissed his permit and bonefish also for a week’s slam! Tarpon are around. It’s an early morning game right now. Damn…... But it’s true. Down by Long Caye, it’s over by 11 am.
FLIES THAT WORKED
Our “Rice and Beans,” here on Ambergris Caye is the Christmas Island Special. We and the fish love them in size 8, 6 and 4. We use 6’s and 4’s for permit. It is our “go to” fly in orange, pink and pearl. The Avalon fly for permit size 4. We also like Gotchas is the same sizes for bones and permit. We do use floating crabs, and small tan crabs for tailing permit with both bead chain and lead eyes. Most of our permit are caught on shrimp patterns. Savannah Flats/Mosquito Flats – 3/0 chartreuse toads, bunnies, tan and white working as well. We have a new olive toad that has been very successful. Long Caye – black death 5/0, Olive toads 5/0, Chartreuse bunnies 5/0.
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Captain Emir for getting our very special friend Bruning into his week’s slam. As all of us can see from Bruning’s ridiculous smile ~ he’s enjoying some crazy times fishing!. Talent met talent when Bruning and Captain Emir joined forces.
What a fun week. Thanks everyone for expressing your fishing passion and fun with us here at El Pescador. It’s always heart felt to see our returning guests, thank you. What can we say? We have been “sold out,” for weeks! All of our guides are working full time and they keep exploring. We are so proud of our guide team: Without you, new angers would never know how it feels to land a bonefish on fly. Without you, our “Grand Slam” plaque is now filled, and now we need to have the guys make a new frame. Wow. YOU GUYS ROCK!
If you have any questions or would like more information, please email us at [email protected]. Happy fishing!
