July 24, 2011 - July 30, 2011 Fishing Report

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONES: : Lots of new anglers caught bonefish this week. Honeymooning Lonni (new to the fly rod thing) and hubby JJ caught lots of bonefish including a 4 pound fish for Lonni. Mark was traveling with his Dad, Sean (a 10 time repeat El Pescador guest). Mark wasted no time and landed lots of bonefish his first day in the salt. We had one strange calm day where bonefish were difficult to catch – no one could figure it out! Austin, who is 14, had never used a fly rod before. After one afternoon class and a few hours on his own he asked to borrowed an EL Pescador loaner rod and caught 14 bonefish the first day! His Dad received a few tips from Austin and caught one on the fly as well! Super Suzanne gets the most improved caster award - from 0 to 70 feet in less than a week! – double hauling her first day! Caught mega bones her last day out!
PERMIT: Great news! Christine’s second day of her permit quest resulted in a nice big permit to the boat!! She says she owes it all to her guide Kachu!! Mark from Texas landed a permit and just missed a grand slam with some uncooperative tarpon thwarting the effort. Sean was guided by Cesar to a permit early the first day and completed his first ever slam a grand slam early in the week! Meredith landed a permit while warming up for the Tres Pescados tournament with our permit guru/guide Kachu. El Pescador guides Raton and Cesar scored permit during the tournament with their anglers.
TARPON: Mike and Suzanne hooked 3 tarpon and landed 2 around 80 pounds each, Henry landed his first ever tarpon on the fly, a beautiful 20 pounder! Sean’s grand-slam poon was 20 pounds as well! Many more were jumped and not landed! 1 fish spooled the reel before the guide could even start chasing it down!! Long time guests Dave and his son Christopher landed a 100 pound and 80 pound fish on their last day fishing. Eric landed a nice tarpon on his first day only to be skunked the next…finishing out the trip with 2 more. Curt landed a nice tarpon on his first cast of the trip! Thinking that tarpon fishing was pretty easy here in Belize he was skunked the rest of the day! Most of the El Pescador tournament boats landed tarpon from 30- 80 pounds.
SNOOK: Snook were not targeted.
OTHER: Eric, Chris and Dave got some very nice cudas this week, 20 snapper in 20 minutes by snapper queen Lonni.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES: Gotchas, crazy charlies (tan), spawning shrimp.
FOR TARPON: Black Death (tarpon bunny style) size 2/0, purple demon, chartreuse toad
FOR PERMIT: Spawning Shrimp, Turneffe crab

REPORT SUMMARY:

That’s 2 weeks in a row with a grand slam! Great tarpon, great permit, great bonefish – you should have been here this week!! Congratulations to Sean and his Grand Slam “wohoo”!! The Tres Pescados tournament started Thursday with 3 days of fishing. Congrats to the El Pescador guides and anglers that placed 1st and 3rd in the fishing and finished 1,2,3 in the casting competition! Cesar guided El Pescador guests Tim and Kyle to victory with the most slams! Nesto guided our friends Ian and Keith from Yellow Dog to the third place finish. El Pescador guide Gilberto placed first in the casting competition with Ian from Yellow Dog/El Pescador placing second with guide Cesar (Gilberto’s son) placing third. Book your guide early for next year’s Tres Pescados !! --Ed
