July 28, 2013 - August 3, 2013 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: Buck and Jake racked up more bones with Capt. Erlindo. Kudos to newly weds Nic &Hayley, Chris & Lo and Kirk & Whitney for their first ever bonefish trip. Barney, Olivia, Crom, and Vivian are visiting from Australia for 2 weeks and had no problem landing bonefish and many other species. Lisa and Pat had no problem with bonefish. Karin and Harold joined Capt. Luis for some awesome bonefishing although Harold is complaining that Karin is hogging the front of the boat! Lance, Sarah, David Jr,, David and Kristin (on a family bonefish island day) all earned their El Pescador bonefish pins this week with the help of Capt. Cinoeh and Capt. Hilberto. Returning guest Wade, his brother Lawrence and his father Roy enjoyed a long weekend with Roy taking top honors with countless bonefish one day with Capt. Kechu.
PERMIT: Barney missed a good permit with his guide Capt. Emir on Friday had him hooked but maybe held a little too tight and the leader broke. Joe and Jeff worked with their guide Capt. Luis but their shots fell on frozen permit lips… they just wouldn’t eat. Todd, Pat, Cale also had permit bites but none to the boat this week!
TARPON: Dave is hooking them up with Capt. Cinoeh, just not landing them and I am assuring him it is a 1 out of 10 game and his time is coming. Nic and his lovely bride Hayley had a 140-pound fish on for 45 minutes before it worked the hook free, and they jumped a couple more on Sunday with Capt. Cesar. Cale landed a nice 30-pound fish with Capt. Cinoeh and lost a 60-pound fatty a little while later. Crom managed to jump a bunch of nice tarpon with Capt. Alex on the pole, Alex says they are 0 for the last 8 hookups, some of the fish are wearing through the 80 pound bite tippet in just 10 minutes. They are determined to end that streak as their trip goes into next week. Joe and Jeff got 4 tarpon to eat but couldn’t hook them on their last day with Capt. Tomas at the helm. Trey also hooked up with Capt. Cesar but failed to get it to the boat. The tarpon are biting we just can’t seem to land most!
OTHER SPECIES: 10 year old Sarah got a big barracuda that fought her tooth and nail, her most famous words were “ cut the line, I can’t pull anymore!” Some Jacks, more cudas, snappers were caught – some were served for dinner.
FLIES THAT WORKED
BONEFISH: If it is in the box it will work? Maybe that is an exaggeration, but not by much.
PERMIT: CI Special, Mantis shrimp, Turneffe crab, raghead crab
TARPON: Black Death, Cale’s creation (tan, fat and bunny!), chartreuse bunny
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Capt. Alex for the most tarpon hookups this week with his guests Crom and Vivian from Australia.
REPORT SUMMARY
Great start to the week with moderate winds and clear skies, permit and tarpon were still elusive this week which belies the truth; lots of tarpon and permit were hooked, it is the landing percentage that went flat this week, some was operator error but a lot was just plain bad luck! ---Ed.
