July 29, 2012 - August 4, 2012 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: Paolo and Lenny had some nice bonefishing with Captain Emir. Lenny watched his dad throw the fly and then tried it as well. Both landed bonefish on fly. We are using small crab patterns on the picky bones with success. We have seen several fish in the 4 – 6 lb range landed on fly this week. Stalking the flats in the front was fun in the evening with the incoming tide.
PERMIT: Just a great week for permit. David and Cynthia both landed permit on spin with Captain Kechu, then David landed permit again to add to his Grand Slam! All nice fish in the 10 – 15 lb range. Aki landed THREE permit on fly with Captain Cesar on the 5th – then went on the Slam! The used a size 4 gotcha for those permit. Lot’s of sun, wind about 5 and big schools of permit made for perfect conditions.
TARPON: Great to see Sean here again, and he had good fishing with Captain Cesar. They headed out every morning at 5:30 for tarpon. Sean landed a nice 30 lb tarpon on one his beautiful flies. I was hoping that fly box fell out of his luggage on the way home. Oh well. David landed tarpon on spin with Captain Kechu toward his “slam”, and Aki landed his tarpon on fly with Captain Cesar – about a 25 pound fish – which added to his “slam”! Long Caye had a lot of fish this week – especially over the flats for sight fishing. Mike killed it with Captain Tomas, hooked 3 on fly and landed a nice 100 lb fish! Not bad for his first tarpon on fly. His wife Suzanna busted a spin rod on one tarpon, so she grabbed the flyrod. Thinking tarpon might be out of her league for the flyrod, she was shocked with a big grab to her fly from Mr. Tarpon! Tarpon fever. That’s how it starts.
SNOOK: Snook were not targeted.
FLIES THAT WORKED
For Bones: some with weed guards…but Gotchas, Christmas Island Special, Small crabs, in size 8 and 6.
Permit: Our “rice and beans” = Christmas Island Specials, size 4 and 6. Also, tan crab patterns in 6. And finally, a new fly working well! Rubber legged Gotcha’s size 4 and 6.
Tarpon: Brown cockroach pattern with some EP fibers to spice things up. Size 3/0. Black death, and then tan toads, white, white and chartreuse bunny’s – size 1/0 – 3/0. The guides prefer flies on circle hooks for better landing success. Most fish were landed on J hooks this week.
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
: Captain Cesar for getting Sean into some fun tarpon fishing and Aki into his first ever grand slam!
REPORT SUMMARY:
It’s been GRAND SLAM central around here. David had a slam with Captain Kechu on spin, and Aki showed up and on his first day out on the 5th, slammed with Captain Cesar. And yeah, three permit on fly the same day, all about 5 – 8 pounds. Mike with his 100 lb tarpon on fly has him in full tarpon fever. Sean, your flies are beautiful and I’m glad you got into some good tarpon fishing this week. Great to see you with your family as well. It was just a gorgeous week here and lots of smiling faces. ---Lori-Ann
