August 7, 2011 - August 13, 2011 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: We have seen some GIANT bonefish this week! from several of the guests on both fly and spin. What a treat. Mark landed a big 4 pounder with his Sage Bluegill Rod! Very, very fun! CC and Zach landed their first bonefish on fly this week, Yes! Jeb, Preston, their dad Baxter, and mom Carla had some incredible bonefishing on spin, I lost count of numbers.
PERMIT: The deal is that the permit in town and south have disappeared, or not corroporating. So, north is best for permit. Today the guys were in permit all day with Captain Kachu up in the Park. They had a tons of shots, changed flies like crazy, but no takers. Full moon. Could happen tomorrow, or the next three days. That’s what we are all thinking. It’s going to be really good! Earlier in the week Long Caye was a good bet. Alex, and his son’s Robert and Sam had a great time on fly and spin.
TARPON: No takes, but a lot of shots and a few on for jumps…... Captain Emir had his guys in tarpon all day at Savannah. They had to have the green toad! Dan and I were just talking about flies. It’s summer. The light is different and so the tones of the fly need to be different. Pale yellow instead of white. That’s the plan. We have been tying like crazy around here. Laura is ecstatic. She had three tarpon on spin bite and one landed! Way to go. Preston, Jeb and Baxter were into tarpon. They caught so many fish on live bait this week I lost count. I’m sure there was a tarpon in there! Alonzo and I both saw the baby tarpon right off our dock in the back. So cute, about 2 feet at best.
SNOOK: I have seen snook in the lagoon. That’s all I have to say. They are happy, and we are not targeting them right now.
JACKS: Big jacks on fly and spin.
FLIES THAT WORKED
FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials size 8 and 6, Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold. Bitters in tan, puffs in tan. Weedguards for bones cruising in the turtle grass.
FOR TARPON: Black Death down south, and now pale yellow on 2/0 and 3/0 at Savannah. They also are lovin' the green toad. Clouser’s!
FOR PERMIT: --- Size 2 CIS for big “lone permit.” Sparse ties in orange, pink, yellow and green. Bitters in tan for the smaller permit. Of course, you always want to have a variety of CIS’s, and Gotcha type stuff. And why aren’t we throwing Clouser’s? I’m going to try this week.
REPORT SUMMARY:
I really like summer here. Fishing is great, town is tranquillo, and there is just this wonderful feeling when the sun comes up over the water these days. We have had a really windy year, and now the wind and sea are relaxed. I’m very excited about the next month. I think it’s going to be epic. I’m back fishing in the lagoon and I have learned so much. It’s really fun to follow these fish over the years and watch their behavior. I learn from our guests as we talk strategy, and I learn from our guides daily. Cheers, Lori-Ann.
