August 11, 2013 - August 17, 2013 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: The Mad River Outfitters group all landed bonefish on fly. Way to go Andy, Russ, Joe, Darryl, Jennifer, Caitlin, Cullen, Holden Glenn and Howie! We had some serious tarpon hunting going on, and the bonefish were welcomed to “lighten up” the day and remember the fun of fly fishing in the salt. Bonefishing with fly can be challenging, but generally speaking, hook ups on bonefish happen more readily than tarpon on fly. So we get that energetic fight from Mr. Bonefish, and we breathe again. It was fun to see the Clark family all fishing together. Beth, Joe, Kate and Joe all landed bonefish on fly. We had quite a few anglers out in the lagoon this week, all with reports of landing bonefish. This is a self-guided experience so these fish are very satisfying to the curious anglers who venture out. Dean, Kevin, Doug, Dave, Scott, and Joe get the adventure award!
PERMIT: Doug went out his first day with Captain Raton and landed an 18lb permit on fly! Father and daughter Alan and Allison both landed permit on fly with Captain Vince! Wow. Felipe is a guide in Argentina and was fishing with Captain Luis and landed a 20 lb permit on fly on the 16th. Dean landed a small – but very loved – permit on fly day two of the Tres Pescados Tournament. He is fishing with his team mate Kevin and Captain Emir. Tim landed a permit with Captain Cesar – and now we are waiting to find out who is in numero uno position!
TARPON: Tarpon fever prevailed this week. Howie’s dream was to see, cast to and land a tarpon on fly. Well, he got the “big bite,” a few jumps and never ending smiles. Howie is closer than he was, and was thrilled with this accomplishment. Mad River Outfitters group leader, Andy, had 4 bites one day, and he too is addicted. (Andy’s first love is carp – so this could present a problem – carp might have to share). In spite of really tough weather, some tarpon were landed but not counted for the first few days of the Tres Pescados tournament. Dean had a nice one to the boat, they tagged the leader but it got away before the photo! The very same thing happened to Tim who is also fishing in the tournament with Captain Cesar. In real life, touching the leader is a landed fish. It counts. But for the tournament, they need a measured and photographed fish to score. In spite of the weather, anglers had several shots at tarpon this week!
OTHER SPECIES: Monty had several barracuda on fly – a completely under- rated fish! Big fun.
FLIES THAT WORKED
BONEFISH: Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special
PERMIT: Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!
TARPON: Black Death, Chartreuse Toad
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Captain Cesar for Team Pesca con Mosca! First place in Tres Pescados Tournament. They slammed and then had the most points for bonefish.
It’s great to see our return guests/family. Adam and Julie, Dave and Gayle, Scott (and now Stephanie), Dean and Tracy, Kevin, Tim, Kyle, Porter, Tripp and Tarpon Tony. We may have had a tough week with a tropical depression, but there were big hearts and fun laughter over the thunder.
TRES PESCADOS RESULTS
Congratulations to Tim and Kyle – Team Pesca con Mosca with Captain Cesar for FIRST PLACE!!
Congratulations to Dean and Kevin – Team Fin Addicts with Captain Emir for THIRD PLACE!!
