August 13, 2012 - August 19, 2012 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: FIrst bonefish honors for Carolyn, thanks to her husband, Ron from Hook and Hackle, and their guide Erlindo. Matt & Sue accomplished their goal of landing a bonefish (turned out to be many bonefish) With Capt. Luis A. Another first bonefish kudo goes to Sarah from South Africa out fishing with her “darling” Lloyd and Capt. SInoe. Matt, Marty, Bill Justin tore the bonefish up in their first outing of the week with at least 30 to each boat! They lost count! Adam landed dozens on his first attempt at bonefish with the direction of Captain Sinoe. Drew got his bonefish fix daily after trying for some tarpon with his Dad Lisle and Capt. Luis. Biggest bonefish of the week goes to Matt with a nice 6 pound fish.
PERMIT: Lloyd managed to get the best permit this week due to the hard work by him and his guide SInoe. A pretty, 16 pound fish that put up a huge fight, taking a full 30 minutes to land. Carlos’ first day of fishing started with a bang – permit by 9 am and off to tarponland but alas… one fish ate but just didn’t stick for long, no grand slam today. Capt Erlindo’s panga boated a permit at the end of the week.
TARPON: Steve, Artie, Lloyd, Hackney all got some tarpon even though sight fishing most of the week was limited due to cloud cover or windy seas. The biggest tarpon story of the week was Hackney and Jenn out with Capt. Cesar, a huge fish was on and after chasing him down with moderate pressure the hook just broke – the estimate was 150 pounds…Argh!!!… When the hook hits a bone and penetrates just down to the barb, the curve of the hook doesn’t seat, this is what bends or breaks the hook. Capt Cesar switched his guiding attention to repeat guests Lone and Kim from Denmark. Lone hooked a 120 pounder but lost it on the first jump!
SNOOK: Snook were not targeted.
FLIES THAT WORKED
For Bones: Christmas Island Specials size 6 and 8, Gotchas, Crazy Charlie Tan, Del's Merkin size 8
Permit: Christmas Island Specials, size 4, Gotcha size 4.
Tarpon: Black Death, Chartreuse Bunny, White Deceiver.
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Captain Sinoe for helping Lloyd from South Africa land a permit and tarpon.
A huge bonefish week with hundreds being caught – lots of tarpon around but they seemed a bit finicky.---Ed
