August 14th - August 21st 2010 Fishing Report

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONES: Mr. Bonefish is the one who helped competitors rack up points in our Second Annual IGFA Tres Pescados Tournament here in San Pedro. Clearly everyone wanted a “grand slam” the first day, but initiated anglers became acutely aware that landing several bonefish over 14 inches was the way to get points on the board. The Kelly Family was here and warmed our hearts. It was my honor to award Frank, Brendan and Joe all bonefish pins – their first bonefish landed on fly here at El Pescador!
PERMIT: Some incredible permit landed this week. Adam M, who is family around here, landed a 30lb permit on a size 6 Christmas Island Special. His guide, Emir, was busting out of his smile. I’m submitting the photo of Emir holding Adam’s permit to “Fly Fishing in Saltwaters,” so stay tuned. You can also see this fish on our Facebook Page: El Pescador. Meanwhile, several permit were landed in Tres Pescados, a real feather for the tournament.
TARPON: Some days you just have to accept the fact that tarpon fishing doesn’t come easy, most of the time. But when it comes together, it is magic. Tarpon rolling down by Long Caye, some hooked, none landed. Savannah Flat was tough this week; no one really cracked the code. Savannah is one of my favorite places to fish. There is nothing like sight fishing over that white sea floor. It reminds me of spring creek fishing, where the reward is all that much sweeter!
JACKS: Schools of jacks on the flats up to 20 lbs. They just don't get the glory, but reports of jacks landed on fly and spin this week
SNOOK: The snook stayed safe this week.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials size 8 and 6. Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold, sexy patterns. Sexy patterns are flies that move so great in the water you just to have it!
FOR TARPON: 3/0 yellow toads, green Toads, Black Death cockroach, and look out with purple!
FOR PERMIT: Orange and pink Christmas Island Specials size 4 stripped fast. Also some gray crabs, size 4 – it’s all about the materials. Also, we strip a lot of flies for permit. It is the way the San Pedro guides do it, and it works! Shrimp patterns, size 4. Worm patterns on size 6 – tan rabbit strips.

REPORT SUMMARY:

I think we are all post adrenalin around here after another successful Tres Pescados Fishing Tournament. The second annual IGFA tournament attracts anglers from all over the world – some teams very serious about competition; others just out for some fun and a great cause. The proceeds go to Green Reef – an organization that helps protect our very special eco system here. In a time of development, the environment needs our protection. Preserving our mangroves and precious flats, which provide a nursery to bonefish, permit and tarpon, is a mission which El Pescador has made a top priority. We recognize our responsibility to future generations who want to come visit us for a world-class experience is dependant upon protecting what we have grown to love.
