August 26, 2012 - September 1, 2012 Fishing Report

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONES: Katie and Matt are here for their honeymoon. They practiced their cast and both landed several bonefish on fly with Captain Tomas. I love to see the confidence build each day. Bigger bonefish measuring up to 22 and 23 inches recorded south by Congrejo. Landon and mother Judy also landed their “first” bonefish on fly with Captain Vincent. The “Savage” guys all landed bonefish on fly, even Rob, who wondered why anyone would throw a fly when they could just use a jig instead. He has been initiated.

PERMIT: We have seen a lot of permit around. Due to both angler and fish error, we did not have any landed this week. Nice schools of 5 – 15 pound fish, with some 20 – 30 pounders showing up on occasion.

TARPON: After the tournament, we were all ready to get bombs out for tarpon. But then, they must have heard us because things changed. Adam landed a lagoon tarpon with Captain Kechu the day he left! Tarpon Tony was here and had several tarpon eats, but none landed. Blow the whistle Tony! Dr. Mark landed a 25 lb tarpon with Captain Sinoe, Harris a small one (but great one) with Captain Luis, Rob landed one (size still pending), with Captain Raton, and John landed one with Captain Kechu – all this happened on Sunday, the 2nd. Yay!

FLIES THAT WORKED

For Bones: some with weed guards…but Gotchas, Christmas Island Special, Small crabs, in size 8 and 6.
Permit: Our “rice and beans” = Christmas Island Specials, size 4 and 6. Also, tan crab patterns in 6. And finally, a new fly working well! Rubber legged Gotcha’s size 4 and 6. Oh yeah, don’t forget about MANTIS shrimp patterns. A basic tan with tan rubber legs on a size 6 worked really well for us in the tournament.
Tarpon: Brown and also Orange cockroach patterns with some EP fibers to spice things up. Size 3/0. Black death, and then tan toads, white, white and chartreuse bunny’s – size 1/0 – 3/0. The guides prefer flies on circle hooks for better landing success. Most fish were landed on J hooks this week.

GUIDES OF THE WEEK

Captain Sinoe for getting Dr. Mark into tarpon and they fully expect to slam tomorrow!

REPORT SUMMARY:

Tres Pescado Tournament Results - As reported in “The San Pedro Sun”: In third place with zero slams but the most points and taking home Bze$1,500 was Team Pesca with 1150 points. In second place, capturing one grand slam over the three days was Team Fly Treks, which took home Bze$2,500. And the grand prize winners, capturing two slams over the three days, and winning Bze$4,000 were the Blue Reefers.

Top Guide went to Parnell Coc, top female angler went to Diana Rudolph and Doug Brady won the prize for capturing the biggest fish. This year, the anglers jointly decided on Bonefish Tarpon Trust (BTT) as their charity of choice. A total of Bze$14,000 will be handed over to BTT and according to organizer, Wil Flack, will be used towards research in habitat protection of the species in Belize. Next year will mark the fifth year of the tournament and the dates have been set. According to Flack, next year promises to be bigger and better than ever. August 8th through 10, 2013 promises to be grand.
