September 4, 2011 - September 17, 2011 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: Ben landed his first bonefish on fly yesterday….and Gina is honeymooning with her fish crazed husband Rick – and they both landed their first bonefish on fly as well. But let’s just say Gina was in her wedding dress, heels and yes, holding a fishing rod on their big day! Love that. Congratulations to John Rossi’s group – wife Vanessa landed bonefish, as well as Ingrid and Julian. Kate and Hafey here on holiday from Austrailia – we all wanted to steal Hafe’s flies - they both laned bonefish on fly. Well done.
PERMIT: Julian landed a permit on fly with Captain Gilberto. And our transfer boat captain, Ricky Ricardo, had a permit spool him from our dock two days ago! He was fishing with a jig and shrimp and the permit came by and nailed it! Ricardo already has a great smile, but we are talking a true ear to ear after that event. So, after the full moon, we saw permit on the front side. Hafe had some shots with Captain Carlos, but they didn’t want to eat.
TARPON: Paul has a personality problem called tarpon! But he smiles every morning when he and Captain Sinoe head out in search of both resident and migratory tarpon. He has had them break his shock and throw his fly, but that isn’t stopping him! It must be contagious because Ramann and Fred are just as tenacious. They left with a plan today with Captain Erlindo. Bottom line, the fish are here. Just depends on the wind, and tide. Early mornings with a big incoming tide and calm days….you’ll find em.
SNOOK: I have seen snook in the lagoon and also by our dock out front! Surprise sightings, but no one is fishing for them right now. More of a winter deal.
JACKS: Big jacks on fly and spin.
FLIES THAT WORKED
FOR BONES: Christmas Island Specials size 8 and 6, Charlies and Gotchas. Tan, gold. Bitters in tan, puffs in tan. Weedguards for bones cruising in the turtle grass.
FOR TARPON: Black Death down south, and now pale yellow on 2/0 and 3/0 at Savannah. Steve has had a lot of action on a white toad he ties with some chartreuse and then a small black flash down the middle.
FOR PERMIT: Mantas Shrimp – big ones. Jay had a permit crush his fly with Captain Gilberto. Size 2 CIS for big “lone permit.” Sparse ties in orange, pink, yellow and green. Bitters in tan for the smaller permit. Of course, you always want to have a variety of CIS’s, and Gotcha type stuff.
REPORT SUMMARY:
Belize is known for its botanical medication…I’m thinking I need to find a tonic for anglers that chase tarpon! It’s really fun to see our incredible guide team so pumped up as well. It’s slow season – a great time to be here and chase tarpon! Read this, if you love tarpon fishing, get over here. I am leaving today for my break – I’ll be chasing steelhead, something I love. But I have to tell you, it’s not easy to leave right now! Ed will be here today to welcome you and will be available to give you an up to date report. Ed loves tarpon fishing, so I’m excited for him. He’ll be coaching out on the casting platform and showing guests some subtle ways to dance a fly. Lastly, I want to remind our anglers that we have our First Annual Bonefish Tarpon Trust Tournament here at El Pescador this January 12 – 15th, 2012. This would be an incredible Christmas present for someone, maybe you! This event is going to help us learn more about our fishery and no doubt, guaranteed fun. Ali has been busy getting all kinds of great swag as well. Yep, fun stuff. So check your fishing calendar asap. I’ll see you the first week of November. Meanwhile, I wish you all the very best. Practice your casting and make fishing plans. In our Belizian way we say, “Why Not?” Lori-Ann.
