Oct 23 , 2011 - Oct 29 , 2011 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: Our Orvis Bonefish Bonanza group arrived with great enthusiasm to learn bonefishing with a fly rod. Everyone succeeded the first day thanks to the guides, the preparation of the Orvis team leader Jason Elkins, our fly casting clinics, the El Pescador guide team and of course our ever cooperative bonefish. Too many names to mention – all 12 boats that went out came back with bonefish on Sunday. Monday more of the same – Tuesday brought the edge of Hurricane Rina to the horizon with waves that kept many of the flats cloudy. Even so, 3 boats came back with 20-30 bones per boat. Most came back with 5-10 and a couple came back with 0. The extra waves and clouds made fishing more difficult for those who were stalking larger fish. First bonefish awards went to over 20 people, including Angie, one of the 2 newlywed couples with us this week.
PERMIT: On Sunday Permit were landed by Tom Andrew and Jean-Francois with JF capturing the prize with a 15 pounder. Tom added another to his total as did Andrew. Josh (of Angie honeymoon fame) arrived the day after Rina passed on his honeymoon and caught a permit his first day.
TARPON: Only a couple boats went after tarpon. Scott landed his, Dan landed his first ever poon and Sean got them to eat but couldn’t get them to stick. Tom stayed longer than the rest of the Orvis group and it paid off with 2 nice poons with guide Kechu. Otto, Bernard and Guenter hooked tarpon daily but none came to the boat.
FLIES THAT WORKED
FOR BONES: All sorts of bonefish flies including tan Crazy Charlies, Gotchas, CI specials, and many, many others.
FOR TARPON: White Deceivers
FOR PERMIT: Turneffe Crab, Mating Crab.
REPORT SUMMARY:
Honeymooners Megan and Tom from Diablo Paddlesports visited after their recent marriage as did Josh and Angie. Love is in the air. Robert and Amanda celebrated their first anniversary this week as well. Hurricane Rina managed to cancel fishing on Wednesday, but the fishing was great the next few days. Guide of the week: Kechu for his enthusiasm, hard core poling and instruction that led to Tom’s 2 tarpon in 2 days and completed a grand slam week for him! - Ed
