December 2, 2012 - December 8, 2012 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: It’s not uncommon to be talking in front of the lodge and get interrupted by a shimmering bonefish tail flashing in the morning light. Patty caught her first bonefish on fly as Howard blew up with pride. Howard’s tackle bag has survived some amazing situations. Bottom line is they travel to saltwater fishing destinations in part because this bag reminded them to do so! Todd and Joan also caught their first bonefish, Matt’s fish he landed from the dock was impressive, and pregnant Cybil landed some nice bonefish wading. Low tides during the day made for some challenging sight fishing with great rewards. Harlan caught a really nice bonefish along with several other species which is exactly what he wanted to do.
PERMIT: Standing on the dock ready for the report from the guides. Some days were really tough – follows and no commitment. Then Wednesday came around and both Captain Emir and Captain Kechu had permit to their boat on fly. Doubles for Ray and Kris, way to go! Richard landed a nice 18 lb on fly which accomplished his goal in the first day out! Permit are everywhere, but with the NW wind down on the “highway,” it’s been a party.
TARPON: Jason was here with his lovely wife Cybil. He was trying to control his personality but when it came to tarpon fishing it came undone! As he tells it, Captain Cesar put him on 70 or so shots, and he finally got one to the boat! One happy guy. Todd was here with his lovely wife as well, and Joan was thrilled when she watched her husband land his first tarpon on fly with Captain Alex, and it was a big one! Fifty five pound tarpon on fly. Jamie is a fellow fishing guide from Montana, and he also had a giant handshake and landed his first tarpon on fly. Bill I think you started things last week. Anyway, our resident tarpon fishing has been stellar if the weather is right. Cody made it happen on fly, and they got it on film. Look out.
SNOOK: For those looking for snook on fly or spin….they are around. We are seeing 15 – 20 lb snook on a regular basis. Sometimes they refuse a fly or lure, but other times, it was a full attack out from the mangroves.
FLIES THAT WORKED
Christmas Island Specials in size 8, 6 and 4 for both bonefish and permit in orange, pearl or pink. Weedguards on size 8 is helpful in the turtle greass. Gotchas, same thing – 8, 6 and 4 for bones and permit. Avalon in size 2 on 30 lb used by Captain Emir for the big pemit in the deep. Captain Kechu has been going down to 12 lb for permit in the shallows with both crab and shrimp patterns. Merkins size 4, and bead chain as well as lead eye crabs in tan and pink in size 6. On the resident tarpon we are using 3/0 bunny’s in tan, pink and white, on 40 or 60 lb shock. Black death, deciever’s and cockroach patterns as well.
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Jason asked that Captain Cesar receive “guide of the week,” because he was able to help Jason land his first tarpon on fly after a ton of shots….and Cesar kept with him – never making him feel bad for missing the shots.
Wow, we have had a busy week here at EP! We are running 10 – 12 boats a day, so the fishing report is from a lot of boats fishing our 400 sq miles of flats. It has been an especially fun week for me because El Pescador has brought in Ray, a wonderful friend of the lodge, to conduct an advanced customer service seminar for our guide team. All the guides have said this has been a very informative session. And my Fishing Director partner, Ed Blank, is here too! It’s rare we get to work together and it has been a wonderful experience. We have had a lot of repeat guests over the past few weeks, and I have to tell you, we love you! It makes us feel great that you come back to see us. Thanks everyone for a great week.
Don’t forget our Annual Grand Slam Tagging Invitational to Benefit Bonefish & Tarpon Trust at El Pescador Wednesday, Jan 23 – Sunday, Jan 27, 2013. Contact us for more information. Thank you! - Lori-Ann.
