December 16, 2012 - December 22, 2012 Fishing Report
WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:
BONES: The Osborne family was eager to get into saltwater fishing and their initial apprehensions were alleviated by the both their guide Gilberto and their constant participation in the daily casting clinics. Gail, Less, and Evan all caught their first bonefish on the fly. Returning guests Joe and Joy added many bonefish to their history with Captain Tomas. Joe is now starting to think about tarpon! Jackie, Mary, Chuck, Jeff all got into to some good bonefish. After landing permit the 4th day in a row Captain Sinoe came back to the lodge to spend a few hours with Jeremy’s family. Anne, Emily and Amadine all caught bonefish on a fly after a short successful hour of afternoon lessons on the dock. Carson and Blake scored their first bonefish with Capt. Alex while their parents Melissa and Marc did the same with Capt. Vince.
PERMIT: Permit City this Week! With just a couple boats going out this week our permit count is extremely high per capita. Evan – first time fishing the salt – first time using the double haul, first time permit master! He says he owes it all to his guide, Capt. Gilberto. Repeat guest Jeremy traveled all the way from the U.K. with his family (Anne, Emily and Amandine) and promptly landed 2 permit on his first day out with Captain SInoe. They barely missed the grand slam with an early release of a tarpon out on Savannah fats. We are honored they would come so far again and again to visit us. Jeremy repeated the permit feat with Captain Sinoe with another fine permit on Tuesday. Jeremy followed this up by a 6 am permit on Wednesday! I suggested he take the rest of the week off since there was no way to top it. Lucky Lady Jackie outshined her more experienced husband (apparently this is a common occurrence) with a permit on Wednesday, She now prefers to be addressed as the permit queen. Chuck landed a permit with his trusty guide, Gilberto. Well, the streak continues with Captain Sinoe and Jeremy another permit on Thursday – first cast! Friday, same thing..Wow! 5 days in a row with permit, 6 total, Jeremy stays into next week so lets se if the streak continues!
TARPON: Not too many folks attempting tarpon this week - Close but no cigar for both Evan and Jeremy’s 1 day grand slam attempt. Both hooked up but neither fish came to the boat
OTHER SPECIES: Lots of jacks, a few ladyfish, snappers, lookdowns, barracudas
FLIES THAT WORKED
Bonefish: Christmas Island specials, Crazy Charlie in tan, gotchas, small crab patterns etc.
Permit: Avalon, Avalon, Avalon (once Jeremy started with that fly with success it never came off)
Jackie’s was caught on a spin rod with a jig tipped with shrimp.
Tarpon: They chased and ate a Green toad and a white deceiver.
GUIDE OF THE WEEK
Sinoe for his 6 permit with Jeremy and the 10 bonefish for Anne, Emily and Amadine.
REPORT SUMMARY:
Great permit and bonefishing all week. Tarpon where not targeted much. I would like to commend Tracy, a diver at the lodge, for his rapid acceleration in the flyfishing talent department – he went from never holding a fly rod to throwing 60 feet in a few short hours during the afternoon casting clinics! He will have to put this new talent to work soon!
